Urkel Curtains and Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis

Well hello, bloggy world.  I cannot believe it's been an entire month since I last posted.  I wanted to stick my head in for just a minute to welcome everybody from Rhoda's Feature Friday.  Is she not the nicest person, like, EVER?! Thank you so much, Rhoda, for spotlighting my house this week!

And if you're here from Nester's Linky, scroll on down to the bottom.  I promise there's some yard sale stuff down there.

Of course, Murphy's Law bit me in the you-know-what, and we're heading to the beach shortly, so I won't get to stay and chat.

So y'know how, when you're gettin ready to go on vacation, you feel the need to get every last thing on your to-do list crossed off?  We have a little bit of that going on right now.  Actually, it's B who's running around with his list like a crazy man.

Me, not so much.  For some reason I just cannot seem to get my head and feet going in the same direction!  Instead, I fiddled around with my (sort of) new coffee table that I found at Marshall's for a whopping $89 earlier this year.

She's kinda cute, isn't she?  However, this baby would soooo fit in down in the Jungle Room at Graceland!

I fully expected B and the boys to make fun of it when I brought it home.  I tried to convince myself that it was too over the top and  I'd be tired of it in a week.  But three months later it's still fabulous and everyone seems to love it, including my guys.

* * * * * * * * * *

Now about the yard sale

I don't yard sale much.  Not because I don't like to.  Once I get up and going, I love it.  It's just the getting going that trips me up!  But back in October, I went to Nester and Emily's garage sale. Their mom lives probably only about a mile or so from our office and the boys' school, so I was familiar with the neighborhood.

HOWEVER....(!)

I was NOT prepared for the amount of people jockeying from every direction for Nester's stuff. I got there about  twenty minutes after the sale was supposed to start, mostly because it took me that long to find a place to park.  The sale was inside the house and I have to say, those girls KNOW how to put on a yard sale!  Everything (what was left of it) was laid out neatly and marked clearly, there was soft music playing, and they even went so far as to style mom's china cabinet (unfortunately not for sale) with merchandise.  There truly was not a whole lot left by the time I finally made it in, but I did pick up a little yellow bowl, which I showed you here, and the gold lined, black lampshade on that elephant lamp down there. And yes, I know the harp is a smidge too tall.  I'm workin' on it.

Pretty from underneath too, huh?

The sale was set up so you entered from the front porch (also styled, of course!), wove through the family room and kitchen, then exited through the garage, where all the kids clothes and toys were.  Nester and Emily had set up at a little table at the end of the driveway and were simultaneously taking money and posing for photo ops with their fans.  There were probably fifteen women in line in front of me and almost as many behind.  It took about half an hour to get to the table. That was a long 30 minutes, lemme tell ya, watching all that fabulous stuff being carted off by the early birds.  There was this pair of gray and brown silk pillows about three ladies in front of me that I reallllly wanted.  Y'all, I was seriously considering whonking that girl on the head and snatching those things up, but then thought better of it.  She seemed so nice, and really excited about those pillows.  I'm glad they went to a good home.

So I only spent  $3 at Nester's yard sale.   But it was certainly a memorable experience!

Finally, here's as far as I've gotten on my dining room project that I mentioned back in April.  We moved the quilted horn chest in from the family room

and finally hung the Chinese toile draperies.
HOWEVER... they're about three inches too short!

Est que vous, Urkel?
I want to leave the rod where it is, so they'll hang as high as possible. They do have a generous hem in them, so they'll be making a visit to the alterations shop when we get back from the beach to be fixed. Then we'll paint the walls and hang the rest of the art and mirrors.  I also spotted a new lantern fixture the other day at Lee Lighting, but it costs $1000, so that might have to wait for a while.

And now I'm off to find a good margarita, stick my toes in the sand and dig into this

Oh Mary Kay, how do I love thee and thy Tybee cottage!

Y'all please hang out and nose around a bit if you're new here.  I'm so glad you came!

  2. I think the coffee table is fabulous and I'd love to arrange books on mine except they get used as place mats by the men in the house! How is that new Bunny Williams book?

I miss yard sales. Most of ours are on Fridays and Saturdays and they are my busiest days of the week. I really need to make the time.

Have fun at the beach, I'm off to Rhoda's blog!!

What's not to love about a Parson's table with an animal print? I would have brought that one home, too.

Thanks for opening up the doors of your home. Love your writing as well as your decorating style.

  11. Hi Tee, I also love the new coffee table and the vignette you created on top. Of course the grapes are one of my favorites! You will have to read my recent post about our garage sale last weekend. There where over 300 people in the house at one time and I was the only one there!
    Enjoy the beach!

  13. No garage sales from me. Not because I can't get up early but because I don't like to dig. I never seem to find anything other than other people's junk!! Have a wonderful time at the beach.

I'm so glad you're back at blogging...I've missed you!!! Your home is so beautiful, but I love your fun writing/sense of humor, too!!!

    YOU ROCK!!!!

Hugs/blessings/hope to see you when we come back in the fall,

  18. It kills me that I had to go to Rhoda's blog in Atlanta to find a Charlotte blogger (I'm in LKN). From reading your profile, I could swear you're my soul sista, separated at birth. Hope you'll post about how that book is. I just left the beach yesterday, and almost bought it while there. In fact, I looked for it in Wal-mart tonight, but it wasn't there. ;o( Have fun putting your toes in the sand!

  20. What a great post! That coffee table was a great purchase and I love the things you have arranged on top of it, especially the alabaster grapes with the painted green box and those froggies holding the ball under the cloche... perfection. Your dining room is coming along beautifully. The chinese toile draperies are spectacular and I totally agree hanging them as high as possible is important. I'm looking forward to seeing how 'generous' the hem is, and if it is not as generous as needed, what you do to add the necessary length. I'm also dying to see what color you paint the room and seeing the lantern you referenced, if you get it... LOVE lanterns. With your exqusite taste, there is no doubt that the room will be magnificent. Hope you have a wonderful vacation. I am off to Rhoda's blog to check out your feature. :)

  21. I'm a new follower, too. I've enjoyed reading your blog and can so relate to loving Disney World and hating cold weather! Ha! And I'd enjoy garage sales if they began at 1 P.M. Like your younger son, my husband has 2 different colored eyes. Your coffee table is a keeper for sure.
